Assists the Ultrasound Network Manager in implementing procedures pertaining to patient imaging. Assist Ultrasound Network Manager in implementation and training of staff sonographers in the imaging protocols and customer service initiatives. Assists in implementation of new protocols as directed by the Ultrasound Network Manager and Ultrasound Radiologist Section Chief. Resolves patient conflicts, patient concerns or patient schedule problems as set by customer service initiatives. Oversees daily schedules and patient examination demands as well as! scheduling conflicts. Will participate daily in “hands onâ€!  scanning as needed as supervisory duties. Implements and maintains compliance with all hospital policies, JCAHO, State and ACR regulations. Ensures that all required age specific competencies are completed.

WORK PERFORMED

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Orients new employees to the Imaging aspect of Ultrasound. Provides leadership and training for sonographers in their section. Has input into yearly Ultrasound staff evaluations. Implements all Radiology and Hospital wide customer service initiatives with each staff member. Must be able to delegate work tasks and communicate issues to other staff members.

Reviews and becomes competent with the department scan p! rotocol manual. Knowledgeable about correcting ultrasound requests with mammographic findings and reports. Reviews all CPT codes at least annually so that they are familiar with any additions and/or deletions in order for correct patient billing will occur.

Advances knowledge of Imaging Ultrasound Unit, including 3D and 4D real time imaging. Possess breast ultrasound certifications from ARDMS, and or obtains certification within one year of start date in the position.

Demonstrates competency in the knowledge of the RIS /HIS modules appropriate to their job responsibilities.

Insures that a safe working environment exists in the section of Ultrasound as it relates to patients, staff and hospital employees. This is in accordance with all JCAHO regulations, all hospital, state and department policies.

Schedules, coordinates and assists with all procedures in the hospital setting. Will do patient consults prior to any procedures, set up steril! e fields, collect appropriate procedure paperwork, and be able to prepa! re a sterile field. Communicates to the Radiologist or Nurse any patient clinical observations made during any Ultrasound procedures. Must be able to perform blood pressures and take pulses, record notes and clinical history of patient as requested by the Radiologist.

Will communicate all pertinent serious problems within the Ultrasound sections to the Ultrasound Network Manager. Will complete and assist in any hospital incident forms as needed, including responses to any patient complaints.

Will routinely restock storeroom supplies and communicate any need to reorder any special order supplies to the Ultrasound Network Manager.

Completes and submits time summaries and time sheets in a timely fashion. Copies all records for any checks on discrepancies.

Will implement, train and oversee staff requirements to educate the patient regarding their exams. Will obtain necessary clinical history needed for accurate interpretation of the examinati! ons by the Radiologist.

Accountable for quality of digital images sent to PACS. Verify correct patient is selected from worklist, ensures accuracy of Medical Record information prior to being sent to PACS.

Responsible for the success of the department to achieve Press Ganey goal of 90%. Every patient should receive patient education and your personalized business card. Apology cards should be sent or given to all patients when we do not meet their expectations. You will be required to submit a list of these patients to your manager at evaluation time.

Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/Entity as well as the proper release of information.

Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.

Demonstrates/models the Network’s Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with al! l customers (internal and external).

Demonstrates Performance ! Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety.

Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes and practices.

Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code.

Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:
Will assist in coverage of scheduled patients within the hospital as well as be available for on-call, weekends, holidays and evenings.

Assists in gathering, recording and reporting information for Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement Program.

May assist with some secretarial duties and any documentation required pertaining to the department.
Must exhibit a willingness to teach and train students, residents and other medical professionals in the field of sonography as needed.

Maintains required certifications (ARMDS/OB-GYN, ABD and BREAST) and continuing medical education credits.

Utilizes good problem solving and critical thinking skills in the absence of the Ultrasound Network Manager.

Takes responsibility for all complaints which are to be handled according to hospital policy assuring complete follow through.

8. Maintains and oversees necessary inventory of supplies needed to perform procedures in

their specific section in accordance with department budget.

Other related duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:
PHYSICIAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Frequent use of fingers and hands in operating equipment and for paperwork. Standing and walking for up to 7 hours per day in 60 minute increments. Sitting for up to 1 hour per day! in 15 minute increments. Pushing, pulling and lifting patients and lit! ters up to 300 pounds with assistance. Lifting and moving objects up to 40 pounds. Must be able to do frequent bends, stoops and crouches. Must be able to reach above shoulder level. Must be able to hear and see as it relates to normal hearing and vision.

POTENTIAL ON-THE-JOB RISKS:
Normal patient care environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust and temperature.

Continuous exposure to infection and/or contagious diseases when working with patients (risk minimized by adherence to universal precautions).

Potential risk for back injury due to lifting (risk minimized using body mechanics techniques according to the guidelines and inservices established by the Hospital Safety Officer).

Frequent exposure to ionizing radiation (risk minimized by adherence to State mandate radiation safety protection codes).

Minimal exposure to hazardous chemicals (risk minimized by adherence to Right-to-Know Laws).

Freq! uent exposure to electrical equipment (risk minimized by adherence to electrical safety procedures).

Exposure to sharps during and after procedures (risk minimized by adherence to sharps use and disposal policy).

8. Employees who work in patient care areas where they may have potential exposure

patients with suspected or proven tuberculosis (TB) must have the ability to wear a

particulate respirator and be fit-tested in compliance with the current recommendations from

the CDC (enforced by OSHA) or must provide physician documentation as to the inability to

wear a particulate respirator.

SPECIFIC PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE:
Impervious gowns, gloves, shoe covers, mask, cap, Needleless system, Patient transfer board, lead apron, thyroid shield, lead glasses, goggles, film badges.

MOST COMPLEX DUTY:
Understand equipment operations and problem solving, assisting in procedures, commu! nicating with patients and understanding Ultrasound coding.

SUPERVISION (RECEIVED BY AND/OR GIVEN TO):
Ultrasound Network Manager

COMMUNICATIONS:
Must be able to communicate effectively with department staff, hospital staff, Radiologists, staff physicians, patients, and family members.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Needs to exhibit critical thinking skills, problem solving ability and interpersonal skills.

QUALIFICATIONS)

(MINIMUM)

EDUCATION:
High school graduate with Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent and graduate of an approved, accredited Ultrasound Program.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Must have minimum of one year hospital experience in the field of Ultrasound and minimum of 3 years patient care experience. Knowledge of computer basics a must. Must be registered or qualified to sit for the examinations of the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonog! raphers in the category of Abdomen, OB-GYN and Breast. Current CPR certification required.
