About the Position : Under th! e general supervision of the physician, provides short-term cardiopulmonary support during open heart procedures, long-term support via ECMO or centrifugal ventricular pumps on cardiac or pulmonary compromised patients, performs autotransfusion services, performs rapid infusion, cardoplegia administration, hemoconcentration, hemodiafiltration, and modified ultra filtration on adult and pediatric patients.

The following are essential job accountabilities:
Provides safe operation of extra-corporeal perfusion equipment during open-heart procedures.

Provides long-term cardiac and/or respiratory support for compromised patients via ECMO support or centrifugal ventricular support.

Consults with physician in selection of appropriate equipment and techniques to be used during extracorporeal circulation.

Assembles and tests heart-lung machines to ensure equipment functions to specifications.

During cardiopulmonary bypass, admin! isters various types of blood products, medications and contro! ls the temperature and blood flow of the patient during surgery.

Monitors and observes operation of heart-lung machine and patient’s physiological parameters such as blood temperature, blood composition, flow rate, and adjusts equipment to maintain normal body functions.

Stands by during certain catherization lab procedures (PCTA) and surgical procedures.

Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).

Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities! to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.

Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.

Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.

Required Skills

Knowledge of perfusion practices and equipment, knowledge of surgical procedures and terminology; ability to work within stressful situations, exercise sound judgment in complex situations and be ability to serve on-call.

Required Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Perfusion Technology

Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion

3 years of related experience including pumping perfusion cases
