Job Description for Child Abuse Pediatrician for Section of Child Protection Medicine
1. Patient Care Responsibilities
a) Provide direction for all aspects of Child Maltreatment Evaluations at the Child Advocacy Center (CAC), including personnel, triage and clinic procedures, support for families and children, laboratory concerns, as well as liaison with referring professionals and agencies. Along with other medical providers, provide medical and medico legal assessment of children and adolescents.
b) Provide formal or informal consultation regarding inpatients at Lehigh Valley Children’s Hospital when there are concerns of child maltreatment; review and make recommendations regarding the plan of care, as appropriate.
c) Provide legal testimony as required. Advise child protective service workers in the involved counties regarding children’s health status, diagnosis, and likelihood of maltreatment, based on medical findi ngs.
d) Coordinate Child Protection Medicine procedures to assess and treat children, including development and dissemination of guidelines and provision or oversight of inservices and other training opportunities.
e) In conjunction with other CAP and Development staff, develop and write funding proposals and program initiatives. Participate in budgeting and financial planning with the Section Chief of Child Protection Medicine.
f) Coordinate and chair interdepartmental and interagency case conferences, as needed.
g) Assess, diagnose and prescribe treatment in accordance with current practice and guidelines.
h) Consult with nursing, rehabilitation professionals, mental health, social services and other appropriate staff to meet health care needs of assigned patient population.
i) Complete all necessary documentation regarding the health care of patients in accordance with established policies and procedures and relevant S tate and Federal regulatory requirements.
j) Assist nursing and medical staff with assessments, perform selected procedures and answer and discuss clinical questions.
k) Participate in quality improvement efforts.
2. Regularly attend the Child Protection Team meetings and Multidisciplinary Case Conference Meetings at Lehigh and Northampton Counties.
3. Take call as regularly scheduled, and if required, providing formal/informal consultation.
4. Be involved with the education of medical students, residents, and SANEs (sexual assault nurse examiners).
5. Obtain continuing education as required by licensing and certification authorities and as needed to provide effective patient care.
6. Facilitate the conduct of research and disseminate research findings among colleagues.
