Definition

As our first line of customer service, Library Associates provide the community with library cards, account support, and materials. These positions are part-time and full-time, have a regular schedule working at all 3 library branches, and may also support our technical services or adult literacy teams. Tentative examination dates for this recruitment:
Week of 09/13/23 - Written examination
Week of 9/22/23 - Oral interview

Dates may change due to unforeseen circumstances. Candidates who pass each phase of the recruitment process will be notified of the official examination dates.

Under general supervision, to provide excellent customer service to library patrons; create and troubleshoot library accounts; check materials in and out; process payments; and perform related work as required.

Essential Functions

Welcomes and communicates with patrons about library services, account issues, and holds; creates new customer accounts; checks items in and out; processes payments; makes change, counts, and balances money; searches for library materials; troubleshoots missing materials and material records issues; catalogs and processes library materials; travels to different library branches in the performance of assigned duties; serves on committees as needed..

Minimum Qualifications

Employment Standards:

Knowledge of modern customer service principles and practices; basic mathematics; spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Skill in employing effective customer service techniques; interacting and communicating tactfully and effectively with a diverse team; processing data and information accurately; operating modern computers and related software. Ability to work in a diverse environment as a team member; follow oral and written directions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; work independently under general supervision; work a schedule that includes weekends and after hours.

Education/Training: High school graduation or equivalent.

Supplemental Information

A valid California Class “C” driver’s license or equivalent may be required at time of appointment.

Desirable Qualifications: Customer service experience preferred. Bilingual or multilingual.
