Job Overview:
Drexel University's Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) is a comprehensive system to ensure the protection of the rights and welfare of subjects in Human Research. The HRPP is based on all individuals in t! his Organization along with key individuals and committees ful! filling their roles and responsibilities. The Human Research Protection (HRP) function of the program is responsible for the oversight and support of three (3) internal Institutional Review Boards. Our IRBs are responsible for the review of human research protocols that focus on adult and pediatric subjects in medical/clinical and social/behavioral fields of study. Within the role of IRB Supervisor the candidate will support the Director, HRP as described below.
Essential Functions:
Assist the Director in daily operations of the HRP Office with oversight of HRP staff. Education and training of Investigators, faculty, staff and students regarding IRB oversight and application process. Daily and periodic quality control evaluations of the processing of research protocols involving human subjects throughout the review process including initial review, periodic renewal/final reports and modification in accordance with all institutional policies as well as ap! plicable local and federal regulations to ensure regulatory compliance. Assist the Director to monitor staff regarding protocol review activities, assure review assignments and process is conducted by appropriately trained/experienced staff and IRB members. Coordinate the processing of research protocols involving human subjects throughout the review process; assign protocols for review by HRP staff and IRB members. Review of convened meeting agendas prior to meeting conduct. Evaluation and editing as needed of convened meeting minutes.
Evaluate quality of products and documents released by the HRP staff and IRB as well as performance of regular HRP Quality Assurance audits. Provide support and guidance to IRB Chairs and membership. Regular quality assurance audits of the Coeus database for all research projects processed through the IRB. Supervise and train IRB coordinators in IRB management of human subjects research and compliance in accordance with University s! tandards. Assist the Director to develop educational material for weekl! y HRP Office staff meetings. Assist the Director to create educational materials for University faculty, staff and students; must be comfortable with public speaking and presentations.
Additional Responsibilities and Duties: Assist and educate investigators in preparing IRB applications and reporting activities post IRB approval. Identify and define inconsistencies in research protocol applications submitted for review in addition to identifying inconsistencies during the ongoing review process in accordance with institutional policy and federal regulations. Conduct primary review for Exempt and Expedited protocols and administrative approval actions. Attend monthly IRB meetings for each IRB committee. Act within the role of IRB coordinator as work volume or fluctuations in staffing require. Prepare agendas and minutes on behalf of convened IRB meetings as needed.
Perform special projects and other responsibilities as required.
Qualifica! tions:
Minimum five (5) years of experience preferred as an IRB supervisor or coordinator working in an academic medical center. Excellent organizational skills, ability to prioritize work activities independently, attention to detail required. Database management experience, institution uses Coeus, Word and Excel software. Extensive knowledge of federal regulatory requirements (OHRP, FDA, HIPAA) and institutional policies governing the protection of human subjects. Well versed in medical and regulatory compliance terminology.
Function with minimal supervision and possess excellent communication and analytical skills, ability to interact with individuals at multiple levels and disciplines, internally and externally, and coordinate/direct multiple projects simultaneously. Ability to exercise sound judgment and to function effectively and professionally during deadline situations. Salaried position involving work days of varying lengths. Traveling locally wit! hin the Philadelphia area and amongst the various University campuses w! ill be frequent, intermittent national travel annually for training and educational programs very probable. Education and Certification Bachelor's degree in science/healthcare related field. Certified IRB Professional (CIP) required (or earned within 12 months of hire date).

Physical Work Environment: Work is primarily in an office setting. Must be able to travel and transport work related materials (lap top, documents, binders, etc.) to committee meetings and training seminars in various locations across the University campuses.
