He angitūtanga | About the role

Te Papa Atawhai is offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and hands on individual to join the team as a Ranger within our Chatham islands Regional Operations team. We are looking for a dedicated and collaborative individual to join our team who feels inspired, day in day out and connected to our united purpose: Papatūānuku Thrives.

As Ranger (Nursery), you will bring your plant knowledge and expertise to work as part of our experienced team delivering the nursery programme of work. You will play a vital role in helping to restore the Chatham's plant biodiversity.

The position will be focussed on:

  • providing native plant and habitat restoration advice
  • general nursery production skills: seed collection, seed sowing, pricking out, agrichemical use, collecting orders, nursery maintenance, irrigation.

We need an individual, who is a proven team player, is great at communicating, and has practical hands-on skills. You will be versatile and resilient and able to tackle a variety of work. You will thrive with confidence and support the department and the local teams' mahi.

If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:

  • A good level of physically fitness, and ability to work in remote locations.
  • A can-do attitude, driven to get things done.
  • A commitment to excellence - sets high personal and professional standards; assumes responsibility and accountability for the areas you are responsible for.
  • Native plant identification knowledge and skill.
  • Experience with plant propagation techniques.
  • A willingness to learn and ability to stick at repetitive work.
  • Practical skills in the maintenance of systems and irrigation servicing.
  • Experience in applying agrichemicals.
  • Good initiative - develops new, innovative yet practical ideas, rethinking how to approach tasks.
  • Ability to use IT systems, sales and stock management systems.
  • Whakawhanaungatanga – an ability to foster and develop relationships with colleagues, public and our Te Tiriti partners.
  • Full New Zealand Driver License.

Desirable:

  • Grow safe and chemical handlers certificates.
  • Current first aid certificate.
  • Knowledge in species' ecology.

The Regional Operations Group is responsible for delivering conservation work on the ground through our biodiversity, recreation/historic, community engagement and visitor centre teams.

The Chatham Islands Team make sure to make time for socialisation and have weekly get togethers. Overall, they like to have fun and support each other.

The salary range for this position is $51,278.00 to $60,578.00 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
