The Registered Nurse (RN) delivers nursing care for patients across their life span, and through the nursing process, assesses plans, implements, and documents the effects of care. Works cooperatively with ancillary, nursing and other patient-team personnel to maintain standards for professional nursing practice. These nursing functions of the RN are carried out according to the Pennsylvania Nurse Practice Act, Hospital policy, the hospital Mission Statement, and the Philosophy of the Department of Nursing.

The intent of this job description i! s to provide a summary of the major duties and responsibilitie! s of this position and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the position.

WORK PERFORMED

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the Registered Nurse.

2. Demonstrates knowledge of procedure done in this area and is able to assist physician as indicated.

3. Implements, evaluates and documents patient care interventions and effectiveness in

accordance with care plan.

4. Demonstrates an awareness of unit budget.

5. Functions as a professional role model and resource person providing guidance to co-workers and students.

6. Takes active role in unit-based Performance Improvement.

7. Participates in identifying unit needs and supports unit goals and objectives.

8. Maintains responsibility for own professional development throu! gh active participation in in-services and/or continuing education programs.

9. Develops, evaluates and adjusts current and future staffing based upon patient care needs; initiates adjustments as needed.

10. Assigns responsibility for patient care with the unit-based team.

11. Facilitates staff education activities (i.e. orientation, competency, skill reviews, mandatory in-servicing).

12. Provides input to annual performance reviews of assigned staff.

13. Conducts customer service activities and handling of complaints â€" patients, families, staff or physician.

14. Assists with management functions on unit.

15. Manages daily operations within budget parameters.

16. Performs in depth, systematic assessment of all assigned patients.

17. Formulates collaborative plans of care and identifies expected patient outcomes.

18. Implements, evaluates and documents patient care interventions and e! ffectiveness in

accordance with care plan.

19. Organi! zes, coordinates and prioritizes patient care consistently utilizing available resources.

20. Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth .

21. Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/ Entity as well as the proper release of information.

22 .Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.

23. Demonstrates/models the Network’s Service Excellence Standards of Performance in

interactions with all customers (internal and external).

24. Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety.

25. Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, pr! ocesses and practices.

26. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code.

27. Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated.

Job Qualifications:
PHYSICIAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Sit up to 2 hours per day; 1 hour at a time. Stand for up to 8 hours per day; 4 hours at a time. Walk 6 hours per day; 10 minutes at a time. Consistently life, push and carry objects up to 10 lbs. Frequently life, carry and push objects up to 75 lbs. Transport patients weighing up to 400 lbs via wheelchair, bed and/or stretcher with assistance when appropriate. Consistently pull up to 10 lbs. Frequently pull up to 250 lbs. with assistance when appropriate. Frequently stoop, bend, crouch, kneel and climb. Frequently reach above! shoulder level. Occasional crawling. Must be able to perceive attribut! es of an object through touch. Frequently finger and handle objects. Occasionally firmly grasp, twist, turn objects with hands and fingers. Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation, high and low frequencies. Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and visual monotony (e.g. computer screen).

POTENTIAL ON-THE-JOB RISKS:
At risk for cuts and punctures, being confined to small spaces, slippery surfaces, assault and battery, radiation, chemical and biohazards, injuries from operating machinery, burns, and back injuries.

SPECIFIC PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE:
Lead aprons for radiation exposure. Follow MSDS and OSHA precautions for exposure to biological and chemical hazards. (Category I).

Employees who work in patient care areas where they may have potential exposure to patients with suspected or proven tuberculosis (TB) must have the ability to wear ! a particulate respirator and be fit-tested in compliance with the current recommendations from the CDC (enforced by OSHA) or must provide physician documentation as to the inability to wear a particulate respirator.

MOST COMPLEX DUTY:
Providing individualized, professional nursing care to patients.

SUPERVISION:
Supervised by the Practice Administrator. Directs care delivered by ancillary personnel.

COMMUNICATIONS:
Must be able to communicate with other departments, patients, families, the community and the medical staff.

QUALIFICATIONS)

(MINIMUM)

EDUCATION:
Graduate of an accredited nursing program

Registered Nurse with current license to practice in the state of Pennsylvania.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Successful completion of BLS.

Experience in occupational medicine and urgent care.

Completion of a Basic EKG course encouraged.

ACLS encouraged.

Basic computer skills preferred.
